Southampton University Ladies F.C 1
Salisbury City Res 2

This was a big game for SULFC. To stand any chance of coming second we had to beat Salisbury.
The game started with Salisbury out of the blocks first. With a very quick couple of strikers, and an insanely quick left winger, the defence was going to be tested today. The communication took a while to get going, but nothing was coming through the centre backs. The big danger was the left winger, who Marie had to deal with all game. Matched for pace it was going to need a number of good tackles to keep her out. Unfortunately a slight miss kick left her with half a chance, and Salisbury soon punished SULFC.
After this Wessex piled on the pressure, and really got going. A string of throw ins in the Salisbury half showed us how much they panic under pressure. With some excellent corners being taken by Scotty, the equaliser game with a great flick on from Finchy for a simple tap in.
The rest of the half was all wessex. Our heads were up, and with a huge pitch to play on and therefore it was easy to play the ball around.

Half time 1-1.

Second half started with Salisbury again being quickly out the blocks. Wessex knew we needed to use the wings more if we were going to get another goal. Salisbury put some fresh legs on the pitch, and this was going to hurt wessex, as we only had 11 players, some playing through injury. The only way Salisbury were getting through the defence was a loopy ball over the top. Linz and Dani were sticking their heads on most of the balls, and keeping them out. Unfortunately Salisbury made a lucky break, and a 1 on 1 with the keeper put them 2-1 up. Wessex really had to dig deep now, play the ball on the floor and communicate if we were going to get it back.

Further subs from Salisbury and wessex had to hold firm. With legs getting tired, we were still making brilliant counter attacks. With a ball brilliantly whipped in, and Em free at the back post, it was a sitter, but the header just crept over the bar and left Em with her head in her hands.
Overall it was an amazing performance from SULFC for the second time within a few days. We fully deserved at least a point, but what an improvement from losing 7-0 the first game of the season. Salisbury we taking a sweepstake on who in their team was going to score S**T loads of goals, as the team spirit at SULFC is so high. We silenced them, and showed never ever under-estimate the mighty wessex warriors!

Great game girls, and our final spot for the season is 4th in the league. Just Southampton to go now!
