Well it was always going to be tough with 10 players. It was Ally's birthday so there was still some spirit in the team. What ever the result today meant that we still were staying 4th, so this automatically had wessexs heads down.
Southampton started well, and with Daisy absent, Finchy took up the goalie shirt and gloves. Southampton had some players double the size of wessex, so winning the ball in the air was not an option today. Wessex weren't pressuring the ball well like they had been recently and many sloppy mistakes and the ball slipping out of Finchy's hands meant the goal was virtually open for Southampton to go 1 up. Not even marie on the line could stop it. With Linz's foot finally giving up on the hard ground, there was a swap of keepers, and wessex instantly started to look better. Playing the ball round on the floor well and using the width. Marie was making some great overlaps down the wing with Em and eventually a ball chipped over the top of the Soton defence from finchy meant Karleen had a run and chipped the keeper. 1-1. Wessex now looked the better team, and it was a surprise we couldn't get another before half time.
Second half began with wessex straight out the blocks. A great overlap from Marie and Em and a beautifully whipped in cross saw Wessex go 2-1 up and surely back to normal ways. However, it wasn't to be. With an unmarked player at the back post leading to an easy tap in for soton and pressure not being applied to the play maker who shot from outside the area and floated the ball into the top left corner over Linz and soton went 3-2 up. Despite some brilliant defending and play making from Wessex we just couldn't get another back. The score is a bit unfair, but considering Linz, Finchy, Payne, Maz, Sophie and Karleen were either injured of feeling the effects of the recent tough games meant the 10 women of wessex did pretty well. Revenge will be ours next season ladies!
