Sun 13 Dec 2009  Cup
Widbrook United 1
Southampton University Ladies F.C 3

Well at last the day came and after 4 weeks of waiting we got our cup match against widbrook utd.

With SULFC having some what of a make-shift team, missing some very key players such as zoe, payne and dani we knew we would have to really step it up to beat widbrook who are also a league above us. With no Zoe, linz took over as captain for this match

Widbrook only managed to field 10 players for the whole game, this was a massive bounes for us, but widbrook did not show any signs of only having 10 players. widbrook came out of the blocks fighting, but only ever seem to offer the long ball into our box, which for them worked out well as we had a lack of centre backs an it showed as more an more as the 1st half went on.

However it was SULFC to strike 1st. a nice short ball from helen at left back into charlies feet and a good burt of pace saw charlie break into space, only to get taken out by widbrooks right back to see the ball go out for a throw. A fast thinking charlie caught widbrook out with a quick throw into karleens feet who laid the ball off to sophie just on the edge of the area. Sophie hit the ball as sweet as any player could, and the ball went curling into the keepers right hand side. 1-0 SULFC

as i said widbrook were using the long ball to good affect, and after testing us out so many times a long ball from a free kick saw the ball land in our area, with NONE of our defenders able to clear the ball, widbrooks striker was 1- on - 1 with daisy and hit the ball past daisy from about 8 yards out, daisy got a nice boot in the face at the same time.

the 1st half went on, and it was widbrook who were all over us and really looked like taking the lead. A mix up between marie and huggy saw widbrooks striker break free again, but she flapped an lost her nerve and took at snap shot at daisy from about 20 yards out, daisy was beat, but the ball came of the post and out for a throw-in

HALF-TIME Widbrook 1 SULFC 1

After a good team talk and a small tactical change in the line up, SULFC came out looking like a different team. Marie went up front and finchy dropped to centre back.

SULFC played the passing game well and it paid off when linz played the ball out wide to em, who then played the ball back inside to marie, who put the ball across widbrooks box, with charlie waiting just outside the 6 yard box, a scuff shot from her ended up in the back of the net. We didn't care how it went in the net, only that it went in.

as the game went on, SULFC never even looked like conceding another goal, we held the ball up well, and we moved off the ball to create space well. great link up play with sophie karleen and charlie produced a great shot from karleen about 20 yards out, and would you belive it SHE HIT THE POST. poor karleen has hit the post in every game we have played this season. it would not be a SULFC game without her hitting it.

the game only had 4 minutes left and SULFC just kept the ball and played the short ball passing game to run the clock down. However em had a different idea, she is our 2nd top goalscorer and wanted another one to her name, and when a shot from karleen was defelcted into the path of em on the right wing, she took he chance and hit the ball low and hard into the keepers bottom left hand corner.

A quick sub from myself to bring hazel off and put karen on at right back, took a little more time off the clock. With widbrooks head now fully down, SULFC played out the last 2 minutes well and soon enough it was full time.

FULL-TIME Widbrook 1 SULFC 3

a great 2nd half from SULFC, daisy never even made a save. sophie won everything in the air. finchy out of her comfort zone at centre back did a fantastic job, and was a rock for the whole of the 2nd half. another player out of her comfort zone was linz. She had to play the role of defensive midfielder, and she did everything right, good strong tackles and well placed passes all game.

all in all, everyone did their job well and it was another great win for SULFC. we are into the semi-final of the portsmouth cup now. just one more game girls and its the final..lets make it happen.
